Andrew Eric Nelson is entering his Nineteenth year of teaching during the 2011-12 school year; it is his Sixth as director of bands at Milaca High School. His duties include direction of three concert bands, pep band, jazz ensemble, solo/ensemble preparation, as well as lesson instruction. The MHS Marching Wolves summer band is also under his direction. Prior to his arrival at Milaca High School, he served as Associate Director of Bands at Blaine High School and Director of Bands at Red Wing High School. Under his direction the BHS Marching Bengals grew from 90 to over 200 members, won numerous awards in field competition and also performed pre-game and halftime shows for the Minnesota Vikings. He was twice nominated by parents and students for the Anoka Hennepin Teacher Outstanding Performance Award. The RWHS Marching Band won numerous 1st place awards throughout Minnesota in parade competition. In 2002, the RWHS concert band was selected to perform at the Minnesota Music Educators Association Mid-Winter Clinic. The band performed for over 1500 music educators at the event’s opening session. In 2006, the Milaca High School Symphonic Band also performed at MMEA under his direction.

Mr. Nelson is a 1993 summa cum laude graduate of St. Cloud State University, an alumnus of Litchfield High School and past member of the MMEA All-State Band (1987-88). He has served a season as principal euphonium with the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band. He also is an active adjudicator of marching bands with both the Tri-State judging association, and holds memberships in MMEA, MENC and MBDA. In 2004 Mr. Nelson completed his Masters Degree from St. Mary’s University in Winona. He and his wife Christine, live in Foreston and have two daughters, Natalie and Nicole.
8th Grade Band
This bands performances are limited to two band concerts per year. Curriculum is designed around lesson book study, theory skills and concert music preparation/performance. 8th Grade band students do not participate in pep band or MSHSL Contest events.
Concert Band
Members of the band program who do not choose to audition for symphonic band, or who need additional musical growth will be placed in the concert band. This band also shares high standards of performance, and will participate at MSHSL large group contest. Concert Band members may elect to participate at solo and ensemble contest as well.
Symphonic Band
Membership in the symphonic band is determined by a students musical progress throughout the school year. The band director will also take into consideration the students past commitment to the band program, dedication to lessons, marching and pep band, attendance etc. In some cases, audition material may be distributed. Instrumentation in Symphonic Band is designated by the director. Students in Symphonic Band will be encouraged to perform at solo and ensemble contest. The Symphonic Band also takes part in MSHSL large group contest. Members of the Symphonic Band are eligible to be selected to the All-Conference Band.
