Reading Recovery® is a short term intervention for children who have not met grade level literacy achievement in the first grade. Children meet individually with a trained Reading Recovery teacher for 30 minutes each day for an average of 12-20 weeks. The goal is for children to develop effective reading and writing strategies in order to work within an average range of classroom performance.
Referrals for the program are obtained from the classroom teachers. Students are then given a series of assessments called the "Observation Survey." This includes letter identification, word identification, concepts about print (book and print awareness), writing vocabulary, hearing sounds in words, and reading level.
