3rd Grade
Welcome to Third Grade
The core subjects for 3rd grade include Language Arts and Mathematics. Language Arts includes reading, spelling, writing, grammar, and handwriting. Science and Social Studies are taught and shared between two classroom teachers. Health is part of our Science learning.
Student goals for this year include being a responsible learner, working cooperatively with others, completing school and home learning to the best of student abilities and on time, and working on the life skills of being flexible and developing more independence.
Third Grade is a time of transition from the primary years into the independent intermediate years. During this time, students move from manuscript to cursive writing, start ipad skills using Google Classroom and related apps, expand mathematical thinking to include division, multiplication, and problem solving, and begin to engage in independent work habits. An increase in weekly spelling lists, an introduction of more grammar skills, and a focus on developing reading fluency are all parts of the changes in Language Arts.
Another aspect of this transition includes the Minnesota Standards. To meet the requirements of these standards, the students do a variety of projects throughout the school year. The students will also be required to take NWEA tests, given twice, in the Fall and Winter, and the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) Test in Reading and Math in the Spring.

Welcome to Third Grade!
In Third Grade, you will be using a homework planner, learning multiplication and division, writing in cursive and become a more “grown up” student and learner. Along with this comes
the additional responsiblity for your own materials, homework and learning as well as behavior.

3rd Grade Report Card Criteria
Report cards are available online four times during the school year. You can contact the Milaca Elementary Office, 982-7301 if you would like a paper copy. Parents are urged to contact their child’s teacher with questions or concerns. Please click on the Report Card Criteria button to learn more about the grading criteria used in Third Grade.
Reading Calendars
Milaca third graders are invited to read at least 300 minutes each month outside of their school day.
Third Grade Spelling
Milaca third graders have eight spelling words a week and two challenge words. The words often follow basic phonics patterns. Students are tested at the end of each week.
