Department Information
The main objective of the Special Education Department at the High School level is to provide students with the opportunity to gain skills necessary to participate in the community as independently as possible. The staff works with students individually, teaching them learning tools, reinforcing their strengths and offering them a variety of experiences.

Definitions:
SAT: Student Assistance Teams are designed to support the regular education teacher who needs strategies and support for students who exhibit academic, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. The goal of the SAT is to maximize the student’s success in the regular education classroom thereby decreasing the probability that a student will be referred to special education. The SAT is a comprehensive approach that uses an interdisciplinary team consisting of teachers, psychologists, social workers, specialists, and counselors to problem-solve to improve students’ academic and behavioral outcomes. The SAT team members meet, brainstorm strategies to meet identified goals, and develop an action plan that includes a time to reconvene to check the student’s progress and evaluate the plan. The SAT meets regularly to assist classroom teachers in planning and implementing strategies that are designed to produce success for the referred student.
SST: Student Support Teams are designed to screen and respond to teacher and parent referrals for special education assessment. The SST is a comprehensive approach that uses a multidisciplinary team consisting of licensed special education teachers, speech clinicians, psychologists, social workers, and administrators. The goal of the SST is to determine if the referral requires special education evaluation or if the regular education teacher should be provided with additional support in implementing pre-referral interventions or if the pre-referral interventions should be implemented for a greater length of time. The SST may move directly to and assist in development of an evaluation plan for the referred student.
