The Business and Technology Department offers classes in technology, personal finance, and business skills students will need in order to pursue a career in business and/or to become financially educated for their personal lives. The variety of courses should be of interest to a large section of the student body.
These courses are designed to prepare students for the world of work and post-secondary education.

This class gives students the skills for using technology in business. We have access to a variety of technologies and software programs that students will use in this class to do business presentations and projects. Students will get the opportunity to upgrade and update their technology skills for business as well as learn how digital media is a big part of marketing your business in today’s world. The units we plan to offer in this curriculum are:

This class is designed to introduce students to the concepts of how businesses operate, the way they are connected to the economy and personal finance topics.
Students will get information on personal business including topics such as: budgets, saving, banking and finance, investing, credit cards, buying a house, buying a car and taking out a loan.
The course prepares students for continued participation in business courses offered at MHS, post-secondary education, employment and their responsibilities as citizens.

This course will introduce students to the world of marketing. Students will learn about the role of marketing in their personal life & business world, how it ties to the global economy, and how it continues to change at a rapid pace. Students will look at marketing, selling, pricing and promotion of new and existing products. They will also get an introduction into marketing research and have the opportunity to conduct their own research. They will develop a marketing plan for a product and also investigate a variety of careers involved in the field of marketing.

This course teaches students how to start a business, how to manage a business and skills needed to be successful in the world of work. This is a student’s chance to start thinking creatively and to learn the skills needed to become a successful entrepreneur.
Real world experiences and situations will be brought into the classroom through management of the school store and event concession management. Students will perform skills needed and valued in the workplace. They will learn the value of teamwork and will practice the communication skills needed to be successful in any area of business.

Class time will split between work days for the school store and event concessions and class days will consist of: lecture, projects, research, discussion and activities. Generally 2-3 days a week are spent working in the school store businesses.
Students are required to put in a certain number of hours per quarter for a certain grade. These hours can be earned by working in concessions, Pack Shack Clothing or the Pack Shack TA Store. Students will work in groups and be asked to put together a fund raising activity for a local charity. They will be graded on the planning process and success of their activity.

This course is designed for students interested in business and computers. Computers are prevalent in education and business today. It is imperative that students learn to use these resources. Microsoft Office programs are some of the most widely in all career areas.
This course provides students with a working knowledge of current word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software programs. Students will work at their own pace through the tutorials. The class will do quizzes and projects together. During this course, students will acquire computer skills necessary to be more productive in their school and work environments and to enhance their personal use of computers.

This course has students study situations and cases that show how business and personal law impacts not only business, but the lives of young people and adults as well. Â This class will help you achieve an understanding of legal principles you will use throughout your life.

This is a college-level course offered by Milaca High School through the Concurrent Enrollment Program at Minnesota West Community and Technical College
It is a career enrichment course designed to give students an in-depth understanding of professional employment expectations and opportunities. Â This course will emphasize the expectations career professionals face in today’s workplace regarding interpersonal communication, decision making, ethical behavior, policies, professional conduct, project completion, team building and time and resource management.
Students will receive 2 elective credits in Business with successful completion of this course.

This class provides students with opportunities to learn about themselves, teaches students how to go about finding career information, and helps them to begin thinking about their future. Students will begin by exploring their personality characteristics, interests, life experiences, and areas of skill and ability. The information gained through various assessments and personal evaluations will be used to help students explore career possibilities available in the world of work.

This class is designed to address knowledge and skills associated with managing personal and family resources. A project-based approach will be used to address such topics as money management, balancing work and family and related consumer issues. This is an elective course for any eleventh through twelfth grader interested with no prerequisite. This class meets everyday of the semester.

This is an introduction quarter of instruction in keyboarding and computers. Students will learn keyboarding skills with emphasis will be placed on accuracy, speed improvements over time, and proofreading/editing skills. They will work the Google Suite to improve their abilities to successfully use: Docs, Sheets, Slides and, Drawing. Digital Citizenship will also be covered to help students use technology responsibly.
- Daily Assignments:Â A variety of class assignments will be given throughout the course. Â If you utilize your class time effectively, there will be little outside homework to do. Â
- Typing Effort: You will be required to have 10 min of typing per day unless otherwise discussed with the teacher.
- Projects: projects, will be given to check for comprehension of materials.Â


Course Description: Â This is a follow up quarter of instruction in keyboarding and computers. Students will learn keyboarding skills with emphasis placed on accuracy and speed improvements over time. We work through Microsoft Office with Word and Excel. If time we also cover PowerPoint. Digital Citizenship will also be covered to help students use technology responsibly. Lessons include: Privacy & Security, Media Balance & Wellbeing, Relationships & Communication, News & Media Literacy, Digital Footprint & Identity, and Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech.

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of accounting concepts, principles, and procedures. Accounting 1 covers accounting theories and practices. The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the double-entry system of accounting for both sole proprietorships and corporations by using real-world applications and connections. Other important objectives include the following: To help students develop an understanding of the economic activities affecting businesses. To help students learn to analyze and interpret financial data. To help students develop personal and professional skills. To help students understand the relationship between the manual system of accounting and computerization.
