MHS School Counseling Mission Statement

The mission of Milaca High School’s school counseling program is to provide all students with a comprehensive, data-driven, school counseling program that encourages the highest level of student achievement through academic, career and personal/social development.   In partnership with teachers, administrators, parents, and the community, the school counselors will help all students to become caring and responsible citizens who will succeed in an ever-changing world.

College Entrance Exams

Most local colleges accept the ACT college entrance exam. It is important to check with the specific schools you are interested in to see which test they accept.

Some colleges require the writing component of the ACT for admission. If you are unsure of which college you will attend, we advise you take the ACT plus writing. The writing component of the ACT cannot be taken as a stand-alone test.

College Credit Options

There are many ways Milaca students can earn college credit while in high school. Each of the options are described in the College Credit Options section of the “Student Registration Handbook” (see the link on the left).

Paying For College

Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows 10th-, 11th– and 12th-grade students to earn both high school and college credit while still in high school, through enrollment in and successful completion of college nonsectarian courses at any eligible postsecondary institution in Minnesota. Most PSEO courses are offered on the campus of the postsecondary institution; some courses are offered online. Students must meet the PSEO residency and eligibility requirements and abide by participation limits specified in Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.09. To assist the district in planning, a student must inform the district/charter school by May 30 (for fall term enrollment) or October 30 (for spring term enrollment) of their intent to enroll in postsecondary courses. The district/charter school must provide counseling services to students and their parents or guardian before the student enrolls in courses to ensure that the students and their parents or guardian are fully aware of the risks and possible consequences of enrolling in postsecondary courses.

Student Eligibility

Eleventh and 12th-grade students may take PSEO courses on a full- or part-time basis. Each participating college or university sets its own admissions requirements for enrollment into the PSEO courses.

Tenth-grade students are eligible to enroll in one Career and Technical Education (CTE) course if they receive a reading proficiency score of “meets” or “exceeds” on the 8th grade MCA. If a 10th-grade student did not take the MCA in 8th grade, another reading assessment accepted by the enrolling postsecondary institution can be substituted. For students with disabilities, there is an alternative option to demonstrate reading proficiency. A 10th-grade student who enrolls in one CTE course and earns at least a grade C in the first term of enrollment, may take additional postsecondary courses in the subsequent term, not limited to CTE. Access the list of postsecondary institutions offering approved CTE courses to 10th grade students.

If the district/charter school determines a student is academically not on track to graduate, the student may continue to participate in PSEO on a term-by-term basis beyond their cohort graduation date.

Tuition and Fees

There is no charge to PSEO students for tuition, books or fees for items that are required to participate in a course; however, students may incur fees for equipment that becomes their property when the course or program is completed, textbooks that are not returned to the postsecondary institution according to their policies, or for tuition costs if they do not notify the district by May 30 or October 30 and the district does not waive the date requirement.

Funding is available to help pay transportation expenses for qualifying students to participate in PSEO courses on college campuses. For more information on these funds, access the PSEO Mileage Reimbursement Program Instructions.

Other Helpful Information for Public School Students

Enrolling in a PSEO course does not prohibit a student from participating in activities sponsored by the high school.

High schools are required to provide access to space and technology during the core school day — if needed — for a student to participate in PSEO, but may not require students to attend the high school during online PSEO courses or remain in the high school for a specific amount of time. Students are expected to follow safety guidelines and school policy for leaving and entering the school building.

PSEO students must provide the school with a copy of their grades in each PSEO course.

Districts must transcript high school credits earned through PSEO by a ratio prescribed in statute. Districts have the authority to decide which subject area and standards the PSEO course meets. If there is a dispute between the district and the student regarding the number of credits granted for a particular course, the student may appeal the board’s decision to the commissioner. The commissioner’s decision regarding the number of credits will be final. Grade weighting policies for PSEO courses vary by district/charter school.

Postsecondary institutions are required to allow PSEO students to enroll in online courses consistent with the institution’s policy regarding postsecondary student enrollment in online courses.

Milaca High School also offers several Concurrent Enrollment courses that allow students to earn college credit for courses taken at Milaca High School.  Through concurrent enrollment programs with many Minnesota colleges, students attend classes at Milaca High School and receive both high school and college credit for the courses.  To be eligible for concurrent enrollment courses, students must meet eligibility requirements of the college offering the course.  Please see our Student Registration Handbook for a list of courses offered and the eligibility requirements.  

Students who have taken college credit classes at Milaca High School through St. Cloud State University, The University of Minnesota, Pine Technical and Community College, MN West, Central Lake College, or any PSEO program, must send official college transcript(s) to the college they plan to attend after graduation.  Official transcripts can be ordered through each college’s website. There is a fee for each transcript you order. 

If you choose to order your official transcripts before final grades for all classes you have taken are posted, be sure to have the college hold your transcript until final grades for the term are posted.

If you are going to a University of Minnesota school, you do not need to send your University of Minnesota transcript to them, as they already have access to it.

If you are going to a Minnesota State College or University  (Bemidji State; Metropolitan State; Minnesota State, Mankato; Minnesota State, Moorhead; St. Cloud State; Southwest Minnesota State; Winona State or one of the Two Year Community or Technical Colleges that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities), you do not need to send your SCSU, PTCC,  MN West, or CLC transcript to them, as they already have access to it.

The Clifford H. “Ted” Rees, Jr. Scholarship Foundation

AHRI oversee the Rees Scholarship Foundation, which was established to assist with the recruitment and competency of future HVACR technicians by awarding scholarships to qualified students who are enrolled in an institutionally accredited school. Since 2003, the Rees Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than $1 million to over 700 deserving students. Each year, the foundation awards scholarships of up to $2,000 each to qualified students. Scholarship recipients also receive a free Ready to Work test through our partnership with North American Technician Excellence (NATE). More information on the Rees Scholarship can be found here.

There are multiple scholarship programs with varying eligibility requirements, but generally they all require official transcripts and a short essay. There are two application cycles, one for fall semester applications, which are due October 1st and another for spring semester applications, which are due June 1st.  More information on eligibility requirement and how to apply for a Rees Scholarship can be found here.

Hagan Scholarship Foundation 

Hagan scholarship is a unique need-based merit scholarship. All eligible students in the high school graduating class can apply, even students who are not U.S. Citizens. Please go to the website to find out the requirements and application process. https://haganscholarships.org/

SFM Foundation Scholarship Opportunity 

The SFM Foundation provides scholarships for students parents who were seriously injured in workplace accidents while working for Minnesota or Iowa employers. You have the opportunity to benefit up to $15,000.00 for 4 years. You can apply at www.sfmfoundation.com Deadline for the scholarship is March 31, 2026.
